Husky First as Women's Ice Hockey Beats NCAA DIII Program!

The Northeastern University Women's Ice Hockey team opened up their season with two victories this past weekend. They scored wins over NEWCHL league foe University of Connecticut and Plymouth State University; an NCAA Division III varsity program.

The Huskies dominated UCONN from the start scoring six goals in the first period of the game. In the final two frames the Huskies scored seven more times getting a decisive 13-0 victory on home ice. In goal Chelsea Dietz and Kelly Morris teamed up to record the shutout while Mckenzie Powers scored a team high five points (3 goals and 2 assists) keeping pace with her impressive totals from 2008-2009.

Halloween marked a Northeastern Club Hockey first when the Huskies faced off against ECAC East member Plymouth State University. It was the first time in club history that the Huskies have played an NCAA Varsity program. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies exploded in the second scoring 5 goals and finished the game off in the third period earning a 7-0 final. Chelsea Dietz gained her second shutout in as many games and the scoring was led by Karoline Perdios with a goal and three assists, Meredith Harclerode with two goals, freshman Lauren Mormino with two assists, defenseman Christina Pagano with two assists, and Mckenzie Powers adding two more assists. Excellent efforts on the penalty kill from Mandy LaPorta and Shannon Kelleher kept Plymouth State's power play at bay.

On Saturday November 7th the Huskies continue league play with a huge game at 2:30pm against defending league champion University of Vermont, who crushed the Huskies championship hopes in the 8th round of a shootout last season, at Matthews Arena. Sunday the Huskies travel out to Smith College to finish off the weekend.

Defending National Champion, Field Hockey, Qualifies for Nationals after Maryland Tournament.

Over the weekend, the Northeastern Field Hockey Club Team traveled down to Maryland for the annual University of Maryland fall tournament. The huskies began with a strong victory against St. Joseph's; forwards Sam Roach, Adam Izzicupo, and Meridith Harclerode all recorded goals with Harclerode earning a hat trick. Defensively, the huskies also dominated, allowing few shots on net and controlling the pace of the game.

Northeastern gained a hard fought 2-2 tie against UDel, who scored a goal less than a minute into the first half. Both teams seemed evenly matched although UDel stayed up 2-1 for most of the second half before the huskies were able to tie the game. Later in the day Northeastern faced Drexel and were able to beat them for another victory. Success came easily again under the lights in a quarter final against Pitt. Goals were scored by Harclerode, and forwards Rocky Kaplan and Erin Kelley. The highlight of the game was an amazing passing sequence up the left sideline which carried the ball over 75 yards up field for the huskies. With the help of defender Lauren Mastromarino, captain, midfielder Sarah Quinn, Harclerode, Izzicupo, and others the huskies transitioned the ball to a shot on net.

The tournament ended at the Sunday morning semifinal for the Huskies with a loss to the University of Maryland after a 10 minute overtime period and two shoot outs. The huskies fought hard against Maryland's hard shots on net, and used their speed and passing to move the ball upfield. Tied at 2-2 at the end of the second half and overtime play, the Huskies fell after the sudden death penalty shoot out and an amazing effort by veteran goal keeper, Sonja Luvara.

Northeastern currently has a record of 11-1-1 and has qualified for the National Field Hockey league Championship in Virginia Beach, VA. The team will travel to Virginia for the Championship during the weekend of November 14-15, 2009.

Men's Soccer Takes Second Place At Penn State.

The Northeastern Universtiy Men's Club Soccer Team competed in a 5 team, round robin tournament at Penn State University this past weekend, coming in second with a 3-1 record. The Huskies defeated Cornell (2-1), Maryland (2-0), and Villanova (2-0) with their only loss coming against host Penn State. Goals came from all over the field; paced with two from Junior midfielder Matt Dupont, and one each from Middler defender Robert Harris, Junior striker Haksoo Kim, Middler striker Kevin Cosgrove, and Freshman utility man Wes Robinson. The 2-0 loss to Penn State, a traditional powerhouse in Region I, showed that these Huskies can play with anyone. Penn State's second goal came just minutes before the end of the game after most of the Huskies had been thrown forward in search of an equalizer. In prior years, the Huskies were clearly second fiddle to the Nittany Lions, but this years' contest was a back and forth battle that could have gone either way.

On the season, the team is 7-2 with the only other loss coming in the season opener against Harvard. Since then, the team has gelled, and the team has beaten Vermont (5-0), Suffolk Law (10-0), UConn (2-1), and St. Anslem's (4-2). After two upcoming games at Boston College (10/11-7:30PM) at Chestnut Hill, MA and at home against Tufts (10/12-2:30PM) at Parsons Field, NUSC heads back down to Pennsylvania for the annual Region 1 tournament. Led by a group of seniors, the team looks to play to its potential and claim their first ever bid to the National Tournament, hosted by Arizona State in Phoenix in mid-November. The team would appreciate any support for the two games this Columbus Day weekend as they look to continue their strong start to the season and build even more steam heading into the biggest weekend of the season.
