What are news feeds?
How do I use news feeds?
How do I get a feed reader?
News feeds are a way for you, the viewer, to see when sites have added new content. You can get the latest news from Campus Recreation without even having to visit the site.
Feeds are sometimes called RSS, which stands for "Really Simple Syndication." The feeds are actually just web pages that are read by computers, not people.
The first thing you need is a news reader. This is a small piece of software that checks feeds for you, so you don't have to. Some readers are based on the web, while others are programs you install on your computer.
Web-based readers are basically pages you customize to read all of your news feeds, and they can be accessed from any computer connected to the internet. Some examples include a Google Account home page, a Yahoo home page, or sites like Bloglines or FeedZilla.
Applications that you can download, like Newz Crawler or FeedDemon, sit on your home computer and collect feeds for you to read. They can't be accessed from anywhere, but they store your feeds so you can view them at any time.
Once you've chosen a reader, simply click on the orange icons you see around our site to subscribe to feeds. Some browsers will read feeds for you, so you don't need a separate application. These browsers include Firefox, Opera, and Safari.
There are so many different feed readers available, each with its own pros and cons. We've listed a few here, but you should choose the one that works for you and your computer.
