Master Drummer-Instructor, Tony Fonseca
The Art & Craft: Afro-Capeverdean Group Drumming (ACGD) is a hand drumming style created, developed, and dubbed by Tony Fonseca and performed by him and his students. Fonseca’s style is influenced by 40 years of drumming experience and the rhythmic traditions of West Africa, Cape Verde, Cuba, and Brazil. ACGD, however, is distinct and unique from all other traditions. ACGD is replete with a fully developed drum language, also created and developed by Fonseca, which is the method he uses to create, write, recite, and teach rhythm patterns and group drumming orchestration.
The Instruments: The instruments used in ACGD are commonly known as “conga drums”, “bongos”, and not commonly known as “ashikos” (conical shaped), as well as assorted small percussion instruments, such as bells, shakers, blocks, and tambourines. The drums and percussion instruments vary in size, shape, weight, sound, and material. ACGD also employs conch shells, whistles, body shakers, and ankle bells.
The Instruction: Students receive instruction on how to produce the proper sounds from the drums while learning how to play a series of mono, dual, and multi-part rhythms. Students learn how to play individually and in various combinations and sizes of drum groups. Frequency and duration of instruction varies with the student, group, or organization. Fonseca offers everything from a 1 hour demo/workshop to a 10 week apprenticeship, to a semester course. to a lifetime of learning.
The Students: ACGD transcends age, race, background, lifestyle, tradition, size shape, strength and musical experience. Fonseca has taught students from 3 years old into seniority and has performed for audiences from every walk of life. He has not yet met a student or audience that did not instantly feel drawn to the sound of ACGD
Learn-Practice-Perform! The emphasis of Fonseca’s instruction is on preparing the student/group fro performing in front of an audience. Individual students and groups advance their skills as slowly or as rapidly as their time, ability, and desire allow. Fonseca provides opportunities for group recitals as well as for students/groups who have reached a certain skill level to perform with him in front of a wide variety of audiences a various venues.
Characterized by vinyasa, the synchronized flowing movement of body and breath that connects the postures in a seamless continuity of practice. Organs are toned, and flexibility and strength are gradually increased. Breathing is deepened.
Instructor: Erin Cooney sees Ashtanga yoga as a practice that cultivates awareness in our daily lives and encourages healthy living, both in our bodies and in our relationships to self and others. Erin has completed workshops with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, and Richard Freeman. She is continually inspired and challenged by her daily teachers, including Michael Hamilton and Kate O'Donnell. Her main teacher training was with Michael Hamilton here at Back Bay Yoga. She is delighted with the opportunity to share this practice with others.
In this class we will start to learn the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga by heart. The postures in this series are practiced in a specific sequence, starting with Sun Salutations and ending in Padmasana (Lotus posture), followed by relaxation. Each student will work at his or her own level, learning postures one at a time. The teacher does not direct the class as a group, but rather monitors the room and assists each student one-on-one when necessary. An atmosphere of concentrated silence is maintained in the classroom. This is the traditional (and best!) way to learn Ashtanga yoga, so you can truly develop a self-practice that is available to you anywhere and at all times. This is also the ideal setting to address any injuries or special needs that a student might have. All students and all ability levels are welcome. It is best if you can take this class in conjunction with the Monday/Wednesday Ashtanga class, or make a commitment to self-practice at least two other days a week in order to receive full benefit of this practice.
Hatha Yoga is also known as hatha vidya or the "science of hatha" yoga. What most people refer to as simply "yoga" is actually Hatha Yoga. The word Hatha comes from combining the two Sanskrit terms "ha" meaning sun and "tha" meaning moon.Yoga means to yoke, or to join 2 things together .Hence hatha yoga is meant to join together our sun (masculine, active) energy with our moon (feminine, receptive) energy, thus producing balance and greater power in an individual.
Advantages:The practice of Hatha Yoga can help you recognize your hidden
physical and mental potentials. Through the continued performance of Asanas (poses), you will gain
flexibility and strength, and learn to be more relaxed under otherwise stressful situations which
many of us go through in our day to day life. Hatha yoga poses also massage and tone your internal
organs, helping to prevent diseases. Hatha Yoga can also help you cope with stress, relieve tension,
and deal with anxiety and depression.
Asanas teach poise, balance & strength. Hatha yoga puts equal emphasis on the mind and the body.
Deep breathing and meditative techniques teach you to focus your attention and sharpen your
concentration as you “tune in” to the rhythms of your body. The elongated movements quiet the
mind and rejuvenate the spirit.
Instructor: I am certified in Hatha Yoga from Ambika Yogashram, India founded by Hathayogi Nikam Guruji. Hatha yoga classes emphasize quality over quantity. I believe in encouraging students to go at their own pace and perform only those postures that feel comfortable. People of all ages can benefit from Hatha Yoga. Children develop coordination and concentration while they twist into the different poses, and they improve their flexibility for years to come.
Melt away years of stress and cleanse your body as you strengthen and stretch. This class will combine energetic flow sequences, linking movement and breath, with playful conditioning movements designed to bring awareness to alignment and to reawaken the body to its natural movement capability. Leave class feeling uplifted and reconnected to your most important teacher–you!
Instructor: Erica is certified in Interdisciplinary Yoga, a unique program offered by the Nosara Yoga Institute that incorporates teachings in Vinyasa flow as well as therapeutic Conditioning Movements to bring deeper awareness to the body. She believes that yoga is first and foremost a personal inquiry, and her classes are about celebrating the individual voice in a playful way.
Find energy in the studio with this invigorating and light-hearted practice. Revitalize and relax your body, mind, and spirit by way of meditation, breathwork, and asana while rocking out to reggae, R&B, pop-rock-folk, and oldies. While this all-levels class flows to old and new rhythms, breath and alignment are always paramount.
Instructor: Julie Miller began her yoga practice in 2001 as a natural extension of her ten year exploration of creative movement and dance. Influenced by many teachers in the Forrest and Vinyasa traditions, Julie has also participated in national workshops with Shiva Rea, Seane Corne, Bryan Kest, and Ana Forrest. In 2007, she received her 200-hour Kripalu Yoga Teaching Certification, and has since received teaching certifications in Sensory Yoga Play Therapy, as well as Yoga for Seniors. She has served as a voluntary demonstrator for the Department of Conservation and Recreation and leads ongoing classes in gyms, spiritual spaces and yoga studios, local community organizations, as well as campus recreational facilities. Julie strives to practice and lead yoga that is inquisitive, free-spirited, and accessible to all populations, incorporating sound as a tool to reach the soul. Julie is infinitely inspired by the body's wisdom, and is confident in yoga's ability to act as a vehicle for growth.
Boabom is a system of arts for relaxation, meditation, and self-defense originating in ancient Tibet. It is characterized by quick movements, tempered reflexes, and an emphasis on agility and balance, developing into a precise and effective form of self-defense.
Classes begin with a series of warmups, awakening and stretching all the muscles in the body. From there, the class moves on to the more technical, coordinative movements. Specific breathing techniques accompany each movement in both parts of class, infusing the lesson with an energizing rhythm.
Boabom's progressive method of instruction means that students learn something new every time they come to class, so the program is always evolving, never a routine that can be executed without attention. Each movement builds upon others encountered before, as they form a chain of increasing complexity. Students are always challenged, though never overwhelmed, and by bringing their full attention to each movement and each moment, their minds are drawn away from the stresses of everyday life. So while exercising, stretching, and strengthening the body, the students also relax and expand their minds: this is meditation in movement.
No prior experience is necessary! Classes will be led by Ryan Midura, an instructor at the Boston School of Boabom
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art that combines music, dance, acrobatics, and martial arts. It develops self-confidence, coordination, music skills, and self-awareness.

This unique class is designed to work the entire body; consisting of strength moves that emphasizes coordination, balance, and flexibility. It is a high endurance workout with intervals of various intensities that will challenge you. Capoeira is sometimes referred to as “Flashdance” workout as it will not only get you “fighting fit” but you will have a great time doing it.
Classes are based on traditional sequences and modern progression, which we practice while listening to traditional, sensational, and energetic Capoeira music (featuring berimbau, atabaque and pandeiro). Each class begins with movement games to warm-up, where specific exercises prepare one for training. During class there is partner and line-work, where the moves flow from one position to another and also where techniques are developed. We finish class with traditional ‘Capoeira roda’, displaying intuitive movements, building confidence and practice playing Capoeira music.

What is Goju Ryu Karate?
Goju Ryu Karatedo is said to display the oldest martial arts traditions and movements. The system
is based on the concept of hard (go) and soft (ju), always in consistent harmony one equalizing
the other. The art combines traditional Okinawan techniques with both internal and external Chinese
principles. The soft (ju), internal Chinese style concentrates upon circular movements and the
development of chi (vital energy), while external, hard (go) principle rely upon physical strength.
The combination gives Goju Ryu its beauty, disciplined movements, grace, and flowing form. Anyone who
believes that Goju Ryu is merely a beautiful style with little of the art of defense, he need only
watch two Goju Ryu practitioners square off in sparring (kumite) where Goju-ryu is a close-range,
infighting system that concentrates on efficiency of movements

The term "hip hop dance" covers a wide range of styles, including dances that have often been associated with hip hop culture, to those that are merely performed to the music. These styles have grown in popularity over the years, partly due to the rise in popularity of hip hop music. The term most often refers to break dancing
Old school hip hop dances are those styles that evolved in the seventies and were primarily danced to funk and old school hip hop music. Break dancing is the best known of all hip hop dance styles, and is considered a corner stone of hip hop culture itself. In the 1980s, many funk dance styles that originally evolved separated from hip hop, such as popping and locking, started to be incorporated with the hip hop culture as well, and could be seen danced together with break dancing.
In the 1990s, as hip hop music evolved and grew further away from funk, it got slower, heavier and more aggressive. This modern hip hop music has given birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles, many of them focusing on upright dancing as opposed to break dancing which is better known for its floor-oriented movements.
Some more specific styles of new school hip hop are krumping, harlem shake, Chicken Noodle Soup, Jigging, tone wop, freaking and hyphy.
Classifying these newer hip hop styles as a unique dance style of its own has grown common with larger street dance competitions such as Juste Debout, which includes new style as a separate category for people to compete in.
Many of the newer styles of hip hop are a common sight in today's music videos on television channels such as MTV.

Ballroom dancing
Ballroom dancing is a low-impact activity that tones and strengthens calf, thigh, core and buttock muscles.
It also relieves stress, improves flexibility, coordination, endurance, balance, and posture. Ballroom dancing
is considered to be one of the top five physical activities, out of 60 studied. It naturally
creates social situations, contributes to increased personal confidence, self-expression and creativity.
As an aerobic exercise, ballroom dance benefits your cardiovascular system as you swing and sway from hips
to shoulders. An hour of moderate, sustained ballroom dance burns 250-300 calories -
twice as much as tennis, swimming, walking, or bicycling. An hour of vigorous dancing - such as the Jitterbug or Lindy - can burn up to 400 calories.
Class Summary
The classes include popular Standard/Smooth and Latin-American/Rhythm dances like salsa,
cha-cha-cha, rumba, swing, as well as the elegant waltz or the passionate tango.
The dance program follows Katalin’s well-thought process, focusing on the students’ personal progress.
A variety of styles, patterns and basic footwork are introduced in each class, which the students apply through
short choreographies. This process allows them to experience all the benefits of dancing. The inspiring music,
fun and easy dance patterns are entertaining and will have each student dancing in no-time! No experience necessary.
Important differences between ballroom dance and traditional aerobic exercise
Aerobic routines and patterns are repetitious and can lead to overuse of one set of muscles. In ballroom dance,
you can vary steps at will and create your own patterns as the music and mood change. The dancers must
learn and remember complex steps and figures, utilizing thinking and retention skills. Men (or leaders)
have to plan what steps to do next and lead the women (or followers). Followers have to adapt to the leaders’
movements, and both partners have to respond to the precise beat of the music. Since part of the fun - and the
challenge - of waltz or swing or salsa is change and diversity, the risk of overuse injury is low. So is the risk
of boredom, which means that you stay motivated and committed.

The benefits of belly dance are both mental and physical. Dancing provides a good cardio-vascular workout and helps increase both flexibility and strength, focusing on the torso or "core muscles", although it also builds leg strength. Many belly dance styles emphasize muscular "isolations", teaching the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently. Veil work can also build arm, shoulder, and general upper-body strength, and playing the zils can build strength and independence of the fingers. Belly dance is suitable for all ages and body types, and can be as physical as the participant chooses. As with starting any new exercise routine, people would be wise to consult their doctor before starting a belly dance regimen. It's also important to talk with the belly dance instructor to find out the level of difficulty in the classes. The practice offers mental health benefits including an improved sense of well-being, better body image and self-esteem, and the generally positive outlook that comes with regular, enjoyable exercise
Instructor: Bilge Demet Senturk, Graduate student at Northeastern University. Demet has been teaching for NU-OPPs for three years, but has been studying the art of Belly Dancing for most of her life. She brings contemporary music and blends with the traditional forms of Belly Dancing and strongly encourages self- expression through this dance genre.

The ancient Japenese art of jujutsu has many attributes to offer the interested student. The benefits that it offers are much more than the physical training one envisions. The art offers tremendous opportunity for personal growth as it is entrenched in oriental philosophy. So interwoven are these connections, that it seems that the art and the philosophy is one and the same. It is ironically befitting since this is after all the essence of the concepts of Zen, and the apparent duality of the Chinese yin and yang or in Japenese "In and Yo". Two sides of the same universal coin, the two essential components of the whole, apparent opposites but better understood as mirror images of the same reality. Yin and yang are both simultaneously separate but united; since some of each is found within the other. they paradoxically both separate and create the whole.
Instructor: Gil Weiner, Sensei Sandan 3rd Degree Black Belt.
