Instructor: Erin Cooney sees Ashtanga yoga as a practice that cultivates awareness in our daily lives and encourages healthy living, both in our bodies and in our relationships to self and others. Erin has completed workshops with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, and Richard Freeman. She is continually inspired and challenged by her daily teachers, including Michael Hamilton and Kate O'Donnell. Her main teacher training was with Michael Hamilton here at Back Bay Yoga. She is delighted with the opportunity to share this practice with others.
In this class we will start to learn the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga by heart. The postures in this series are practiced in a specific sequence, starting with Sun Salutations and ending in Padmasana (Lotus posture), followed by relaxation. Each student will work at his or her own level, learning postures one at a time. The teacher does not direct the class as a group, but rather monitors the room and assists each student one-on-one when necessary. An atmosphere of concentrated silence is maintained in the classroom. This is the traditional (and best!) way to learn Ashtanga yoga, so you can truly develop a self-practice that is available to you anywhere and at all times. This is also the ideal setting to address any injuries or special needs that a student might have. All students and all ability levels are welcome. It is best if you can take this class in conjunction with the Monday/Wednesday Ashtanga class, or make a commitment to self-practice at least two other days a week in order to receive full benefit of this practice.
Hatha Yoga is also known as hatha vidya or the "science of hatha" yoga. What most people refer to as simply "yoga" is actually Hatha Yoga. The word Hatha comes from combining the two Sanskrit terms "ha" meaning sun and "tha" meaning moon.Yoga means to yoke, or to join 2 things together .Hence hatha yoga is meant to join together our sun (masculine, active) energy with our moon (feminine, receptive) energy, thus producing balance and greater power in an individual.
Advantages:The practice of Hatha Yoga can help you recognize your hidden
physical and mental potentials. Through the continued performance of Asanas (poses), you will gain
flexibility and strength, and learn to be more relaxed under otherwise stressful situations which
many of us go through in our day to day life. Hatha yoga poses also massage and tone your internal
organs, helping to prevent diseases. Hatha Yoga can also help you cope with stress, relieve tension,
and deal with anxiety and depression.
Asanas teach poise, balance & strength. Hatha yoga puts equal emphasis on the mind and the body.
Deep breathing and meditative techniques teach you to focus your attention and sharpen your
concentration as you “tune in” to the rhythms of your body. The elongated movements quiet the
mind and rejuvenate the spirit.
Instructor: I am certified in Hatha Yoga from Ambika Yogashram, India founded by Hathayogi Nikam Guruji. Hatha yoga classes emphasize quality over quantity. I believe in encouraging students to go at their own pace and perform only those postures that feel comfortable. People of all ages can benefit from Hatha Yoga. Children develop coordination and concentration while they twist into the different poses, and they improve their flexibility for years to come.

What is Goju Ryu Karate?
Goju Ryu Karatedo is said to display the oldest martial arts traditions and movements. The system
is based on the concept of hard (go) and soft (ju), always in consistent harmony one equalizing
the other. The art combines traditional Okinawan techniques with both internal and external Chinese
principles. The soft (ju), internal Chinese style concentrates upon circular movements and the
development of chi (vital energy), while external, hard (go) principle rely upon physical strength.
The combination gives Goju Ryu its beauty, disciplined movements, grace, and flowing form. Anyone who
believes that Goju Ryu is merely a beautiful style with little of the art of defense, he need only
watch two Goju Ryu practitioners square off in sparring (kumite) where Goju-ryu is a close-range,
infighting system that concentrates on efficiency of movements

The term "Hip-Hop Dance" is the dance of Hip-Hop culture.
Old school Hip-Hop dances are those styles that evolved in the seventies and were primarily danced to funk and old school Hip-Hop music and are a corner stone of the Hip-Hop culture. Break dancing is the first known of all Hip-Hop dance which originated in the Bronx, NY, while other funk dance styles that originally evolved on the west coast are popping and locking.
As Hip-Hop music evolved, it gave birth to new styles of Hip-Hop dance. In the 90’s, much Hip-Hop dancing focused on upright dancing such as New Jack Swing as opposed to break dancing, better known for its floor-oriented movements. Some more specific styles of new school Hip- Hop include elements of krump, waacking, and vogue.

Ballroom dance
Ballroom dance is a low-impact activity that tones and strengthens calf, thigh, and buttock muscles. It relieves stress, improves flexibility, coordination, endurance, balance, and posture. It naturally creates social situations, contributes to increased personal confidence, self expression and creativity.
An hour of moderate, sustained dance burns 300-500 calories - twice as much as tennis, swimming, walking, or bicycling. An hour of vigorous dancing - such as the Swing or Cha-cha-cha - can burn up to 400 calories. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute endorses dance as a way to lower the risk of coronary heart disease, control blood pressure, reduce weight, and boost HDL cholesterol levels. Ballroom dance can reduce back pain, slow age-related muscle loss, and due to its weight-bearing nature, help to build and maintain strong bones.

The benefits of belly dance are both mental and physical. Dancing provides a good cardio-vascular workout and helps increase both flexibility and strength, focusing on the torso or "core muscles", although it also builds leg strength. Many belly dance styles emphasize muscular "isolations", teaching the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently. Veil work can also build arm, shoulder, and general upper-body strength, and playing the zils can build strength and independence of the fingers. Belly dance is suitable for all ages and body types, and can be as physical as the participant chooses. As with starting any new exercise routine, people would be wise to consult their doctor before starting a belly dance regimen. It's also important to talk with the belly dance instructor to find out the level of difficulty in the classes. The practice offers mental health benefits including an improved sense of well-being, better body image and self-esteem, and the generally positive outlook that comes with regular, enjoyable exercise
Instructor: Bilge Demet Senturk, Graduate student at Northeastern University. Demet has been teaching for NU-OPPs for three years, but has been studying the art of Belly Dancing for most of her life. The ancient Japenese art of jujutsu has many attributes to offer the interested student. The benefits that it offers are much more than the physical training one envisions. The art offers tremendous opportunity for personal growth as it is entrenched in oriental philosophy. So interwoven are these connections, that it seems that the art and the philosophy is one and the same. It is ironically befitting since this is after all the essence of the concepts of Zen, and the apparent duality of the Chinese yin and yang or in Japenese "In and Yo". Two sides of the same universal coin, the two essential components of the whole, apparent opposites but better understood as mirror images of the same reality. Yin and yang are both simultaneously separate but united; since some of each is found within the other. they paradoxically both separate and create the whole.
Instructor: Gil Weiner, Sensei Sandan 3rd Degree Black Belt.

Palangi kickboxing is a martial arts kickboxing class that involves cardiovascular and resistance training.
The class will consist of five, 60-minute sessions:
♦ Class 1 – The first class I will introduce myself and will explain that the class will be a tough, but fun, workout.
I will explain that the goal of the classes is to teach the students beginner techniques and that safety is important.
I will tell them that I suggest purchasing boxing gloves, hand wraps, and kickboxing shoes to protect themselves from injury.
I will tell them I can show them how to use the hand wraps. After the class introduces themselves to one another, we will jump
rope for five minutes and then I will lead a warm up. After the warm up, I will explain techniques we will be covering for the
remainder of the class, which include stance, breathing, and four punches – jab, cross, hook, uppercut. The students will follow
my direction and practice the punches and their stance. We will need mitts in order to work in pairs or triples.
While the students work in pairs or triples, I will go around helping them correct their techniques and answer any questions
they may have. In addition to learning these techniques, we will use dumbbells and incorporate squats and crunches.
♦ Class 2 – The second class will begin with five minutes worth of jumping rope and then a warm up that I will lead. I will
review the proper stance and the four punches and ask someone to demonstrate the punches with me. I will also show the students
the proper way to move the freestanding bags out. Then, the students will break off into pairs or triples to work together on the
punches and stance while using mitts. Next, we will break the class in half. Half will work on the freestanding bags incorporating
the punches, and the other half will work with dumbbells. After water breaks, the students will switch places. Then, halfway
through the class, I will teach the students two kicks – the front kick and the roundhouse kick. They will all practice along
with me and then the class will break up into two groups. Half will practice the kicks on the bags while the other half of the
class engages in a five-minute workout that rotates between five pushups, ten crunches, and fifteen squats. After the five minutes
are up, the students will have a water break and then switch.
♦ Class 3 – The third class will begin with five minutes worth of jumping rope and then a warm up. The students will break into
pairs and work on the mitts together for about 10 minutes. The students will incorporate the four punches and will be reminded to
keep their hands up to protect their faces. They will also be reminded of how to properly breathe. Next, I will review the front
and roundhouse kicks. Then, half the students will work on the freestanding bags, incorporating a combination of the punches and
kicks learned, while the other half uses dumbbells. I will be walking around helping correct the students’ techniques. Between
rounds, stretching will be involved to increase flexibility. After a few rounds, the students will switch places. At the end
of the class, there will be a cool down.
♦ Class 4 – The fourth class will begin with ten minutes worth of jumping rope and then a warm up. The students will break into
pairs and work on the mitts together for about 10 minutes. The students will incorporate combinations of the four punches and will
be reminded to keep their hands up to protect their faces. Ducking and moving around rather than staying in one place will be
encouraged. After a water break, half the students will work on the freestanding bags, incorporating a combination of the punches
and kicks learned, while the other half engages in pushups, squats, lunges, and crunches. I will be walking around helping correct
the students’ techniques. Between rounds, stretching will be involved to increase flexibility. After a few rounds the students
will switch. At the end of the class, there will be a cool down.
♦ Class 5 – The fifth class will begin with ten minutes worth of jumping rope and then a warm up. The students will break into pairs
and work on the mitts together for about fifteen minutes. Moving back and forth across the room while punching will be one of the partner
drills incorporating the left jab. After each person takes part in this drill, the students will go back to incorporating different
combinations of punches. Then, the class will break in half and one half will work on the freestanding bags, incorporating a combination
of the punches and kicks learned, while the other half uses dumbbells. After a water break, the class will switch places. Finally, the
students will all perform a five-minute workout involving five pushups, ten crunches, and fifteen squats. Then, there will be a cool
down and certificates will be awarded to the students for having completed the five beginner classes.

In cycling poor core strength can show up as a side-to-side rocking of the shoulders and spine when the pedal is pushed down, even when the saddle is the right height and the rider is not excessively mashing the pedals. This is generally most evident when climbing seated.
Strong core muscles make you a better cyclist, but cycling doesn't keep your core muscles strong. To improve any imbalances created by cycling, plus improve your posture, flexibility and overall performance, we will focus on the deep abdominal muscles (called the transverse abdominis), as well as the hips, gluteus, and shoulder girdle.
